In the Philippines, Mydans took last of his pictures to reach the U.S. Among them was the picture of his wife, Shelley, marching back from Sunday mass at the head of a regiment of Philippine soldiers. An invaluable aid to her husband, both in finding and setting up stories and in placating unwilling subjects, she had to share with him all the hardships of a war correspondent's life.
