Entombed Eternally

Seaman First Class Howard E. Ortega never returned to his home in New Mexico. He was one of eighty-six sailors aboard the USS Lagarto, a submarine conducting patrol in Thailand during WW11.

The submarine was never heard from again after May 3, 1945--until it was recently discovered 150' off the coast of the South China Sea by a British Research Diver.

Memorial services were attended by friends of his who are still living. Joe Sims, his best friend, attended the ceremony. Ortega's sister, a retired nun, is currently in a convent in Indiana and mourns for him just as much today as she did sixty-one years ago.
